Boxing at home: what you need to get started

You do not need a full gym to start boxing at home. A pair of gloves, hand wraps and something to hit will cover most of what a beginner needs. If you are new to it, a few lessons with a coach help you learn safe technique before you hit a heavy bag hard.

1. Gloves first

FIVING boxing gloves

These suit boxing, kickboxing and heavy bag training for men and women. Check the size chart for the right weight.

2. Wraps protect your hands

FIGHTR boxing hand wraps

Semi-elastic 160-inch wraps with a thumb loop. Wrap your hands before every session, even for light bag work.

3. If you cannot hang a bag

Freestanding punching bag

A 70-inch freestanding bag for teens and adults, which also comes with gloves. It needs no ceiling mount.

4. If you have a solid mount

Mesetast 4 ft heavy bag set

A 4 ft heavy bag set with 12 oz gloves. It arrives unfilled, so plan what you will fill it with.

5. For small spaces

YMX Boxing reflex ball set

Four reflex balls with two headbands and a counter app. It takes almost no room and suits timing and coordination practice.

Which one to choose

Start with gloves and wraps, add a bag that suits your home, and use reflex balls when space is tight. If you plan to spar, add a mouthguard and shin guards for kickboxing.
